How to extract pages from a PDF

What goes into the new file and what stays behind
The new file is your PDF with every page you didn’t pick taken out, so the pages you keep are not copied or redrawn: their text, fonts and images stay exactly as they were. They come out in their original order whatever order you clicked them in, and a page number typed twice is used once. Your original file is not changed, and the new one is saved with “-extracted” added to its name.
Because the pages stay in their own file, what ties them together comes along: bookmarks that lead to the pages you picked, links from one of them to another, and form fields that can still be filled in. The file keeps its title, but files attached to the whole document, and anything set to run when it opens, stay behind: you get the pages you picked and nothing else.
The pages you left out are really gone. A link or bookmark that jumped to one of them is removed, and their text, pictures and form answers leave the file with them. We test this with a clickable table of contents that links to a page left out: that page’s words must not appear anywhere in the saved file. Screen-reader tags in an accessible PDF are taken out, because they hold text from the other pages too.
Example: two pages out of a club handbook
For this example we made a nine-page handbook for a made-up cycling club. New riders only need two pages of it: the Sunday route map on page 4 and the kit list on page 5.
Type “4-5” in the Pages box, or click the two pages, and the button changes to “Extract 2 pages”. After saving you have a small two-page file to send to the new riders, and the full handbook is still on your device, unchanged.

What to expect
Extracting gives you one new file holding the pages you chose. For several files at once, use Split PDF.
The pages keep their original order. To change it, follow up with Rearrange pages.
Numbering printed on a page travels with it, so an extracted page 34 still says 34.
Notes, highlights, bookmarks and form fields on the pages you pick come with them. Screen-reader tags in an accessible PDF don’t. Your original file does not change.

Can I put the pages in a different order?
Not here: extracted pages keep the order they had in the file. Save them first, then use Rearrange pages to drag them where you want.
Will the pages look the same?
Yes. The pages keep their text, images and fonts, including Arabic text, exactly as they were. Bookmarks and links among the pages you pick still work, and form fields on them can still be filled in.
How do I save specific pages of a PDF as a new file?
Click the pages you want or type their numbers, such as 2, 5-7, then press “Extract pages”. You get a new file holding just those pages in their original order, and the original stays as it was.
Are bookmarks and form fields kept?
Yes, for the pages you pick: bookmarks that lead to them, links between them and their form fields all keep working. Bookmarks and links to pages you left out are removed, along with those pages. Screen-reader tags in an accessible PDF are not kept.
Why can’t I open my password-protected PDF?
Protected files are encrypted, so their pages can’t be read or copied. Remove the password first, then open the file again.
