About

PDFSahl is a set of free tools for everyday work with PDF files: merging, splitting, editing, signing, filling in forms, adding text and page numbers, and a good deal more. There is no sign-up, no subscription, no daily limit and no watermark on your files.

Why "Sahl"?

Sahl (سهل) is the Arabic word for "easy". That is the whole idea: open the page, choose your file, get the result. No account to create, no plan to pick, no program to install.

Who builds it

PDFSahl is built by Reo, its founder. It began with a plain frustration: Arabic PDFs that fell apart in tools made only with English in mind, with letters that came unjoined, lines that ran backwards and forms that would not take Arabic answers. Each tool here was built to fix one of those everyday problems, and the guides on our blog explain what works and say plainly what does not.

Your files stay on your device

Every tool runs inside your web browser. When you choose a file, it is read and changed on your own computer or phone, and the finished file is handed straight back to you. Your files are never uploaded to us or to anyone else, which is why this site can be free without asking you to trust it with your documents.

Arabic, done properly

Most PDF tools treat Arabic as an afterthought: letters come out unjoined, lines read backwards, and numbers in an Arabic sentence end up reversed. Every tool here that writes text is built and tested for Arabic from the start, joined and from the right, with Arabic and English mixed on one line in the order you read them.

How we test

Every tool is tested before it goes live with files we make ourselves: invoices, forms, certificates, reports and letters written with invented names and numbers, in English, in Arabic and with both mixed on one line. We open the results in several PDF readers, on phones and computers, and check Arabic text letter by letter. We never see the files you open here. They stay on your device, so they are never used for testing or for anything else.

Tools that take something out of a file get a stricter check. Every tool that removes pages is covered by a permanent automated test: a test file hides unique text on the page being removed, and the test fails if that text can be found anywhere in the saved file, even inside compressed data. Redact PDF is checked the same way for the text and pictures under its black boxes. Before a tool is released, we also run it on a collection of real-world PDFs of our own, such as Word and Google Docs exports, scans and filled-in forms, and check that every result opens with the right pages.

What it cannot do

We would rather tell you the limits than have you find them. The tools cannot read text from a scanned page and do not convert to or from Word. Compress PDF makes pictures smaller, but it cannot shrink a file that is mostly text or drawings. A visual signature is not a certified digital signature. Where a tool has a limit, its own page says so.

Built on open source

This site stands on the work of open-source projects: pdf-lib (MIT) for building PDF files, PDFium (Apache-2.0 and BSD) through @embedpdf/pdfium (MIT) for drawing pages and editing text, HarfBuzz (MIT) for shaping Arabic, fontkit (MIT), bidi-js (MIT), fflate (MIT), Astro, React and Tailwind CSS (all MIT).

The fonts are Noto Sans, Noto Serif, Noto Naskh Arabic, Noto Sans Arabic, Noto Kufi Arabic, Amiri, Cairo, Arimo, Tinos, Cousine, Caveat, Dancing Script and Aref Ruqaa, all under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. Our thanks to everyone who made them.
