The three ways to split, and what they do to file sizes
“Split every few pages” cuts after a fixed number of pages; 1 gives a file per page. “Choose page ranges” makes each range you type its own file, and ranges may overlap: “1, 1-5” gives a file of page 1 alone and a file of pages 1 to 5. “Under a size” fills each file with as many whole pages as fit under the limit.
A megabyte in the size box is one million bytes, and each part is measured by actually saving it. Don’t be surprised if the parts add up to more than the original: each one carries its own copy of the fonts and pictures its pages use. A 12-page sample report of 139.5 KB became twelve single-page files adding up to 638 KB, each carrying the Arabic font with it.
Example: a handbook split into its chapters
For this example we used a seven-page sample handbook of an invented workshop club, three chapters with ten bookmarks between them. Each chapter was going to a different volunteer to check.
We chose “Choose page ranges” and typed 1-2, 3-5, 6-7. Three files came out, 42.7 KB, 45 KB and 42.3 KB, and each kept only the bookmarks of its own chapter: chapter 2’s file opens with “Chapter 2: Using the workshop” and its three sections, and nothing from chapters 1 or 3.
There is no automatic split by chapter, because PDFs rarely record where a chapter begins; the bookmarks show you which pages to type. When the checked chapters come back, Merge PDF puts them together again with their bookmarks.
Split, extract or delete?
Splitting gives you several files. For a few pages in a single file, such as three pages of a long statement, Extract pages is quicker; to keep the file without some pages, Delete pages. And if the reason is an upload limit, try Compress PDF first: a scan full of large pictures may shrink under the limit, so you can send one file instead of three.

There is no automatic split by chapter or heading: PDFs rarely record where a chapter begins, so you choose the ranges.
To keep a few pages in one new file instead of making many files, use Extract pages.
Each file keeps the bookmarks, links and form fields of its own pages. A bookmark or link that led to a page in another file is removed, so no file carries another file’s pages hidden inside it. Files attached to the whole document, and anything set to run when it opens, are not carried into the parts.

Can I split a PDF for free, with no sign-up?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no daily limit, and no watermark is added to your files.
Is my file uploaded to a server?
No. Splitting happens entirely inside your browser, on your own device. Your file is never sent to us or anyone else.
How do I split a PDF by page range?
Use a dash for a range and commas between ranges. For example, “1-3, 5, 8-” creates three files: pages 1 to 3, page 5, and page 8 to the end. Arabic digits work too.
How do I save every page as a separate PDF?
Choose “Split every few pages” and set it to 1 page per file. You’ll get one PDF for each page.
What is the ZIP file?
When splitting creates several files, you can download them all at once in a single ZIP file. Most computers and phones open a ZIP file with a double-click or a tap. You can also download each file separately.
Will the quality of my pages change?
No. Pages are copied exactly as they are, so text, images and fonts, including Arabic text, stay the same.
How do I split a PDF by size?
Choose “Under a size” and type the largest size each file may be, such as 10 MB for an email or 2 MB for an upload form. Each file takes as many whole pages as fit under it, measured on the finished file. A single page bigger than the limit on its own gets a file of its own, marked, and Compress PDF can make it smaller.
Why can’t I split a password-protected PDF?
Protected PDFs are encrypted, so their pages can’t be copied into new files. Remove the password first, then add the file again.
Do bookmarks and links still work in each file?
Yes, within each file. Every part keeps the bookmarks that lead to its own pages, the links between them and its fillable form fields. A bookmark or link that pointed at a page now in another part is removed, and the pages of the other parts are not carried along hidden. Screen-reader tags in an accessible PDF are not kept.
