PDF Image Converter

This PDF image converter works in both directions: PDF to image and image to PDF. Turn the pages of a PDF into JPG or PNG pictures to post, share or drop into a presentation, or gather photos and scans into one tidy PDF to send or print.

Tools in this group

PDF to JPG saves the pages you choose as pictures, one at a time or all together in a ZIP file, at the level of detail you need. JPG to PDF takes JPG and PNG pictures, puts them in your order and turns sideways photos the right way up, one picture per page. Compress PDF makes the pictures inside a PDF smaller, so scans and photos fit an email or an upload limit. Grayscale PDF redraws every page in grey, for printers and for submission rules that ask for black and white.

You can convert PDF and images free, with no sign-up and no watermark, as often as you like. Everything is converted inside your browser, so your photos and documents never leave your device.

What it does not do: it does not read the words in a picture (that is OCR), and it does not convert to or from Word. The text in pictures made from a PDF can no longer be selected.

Common mistakes

Compressing a file that is mostly text. Compress PDF makes the pictures inside a PDF smaller, so a file of plain text and drawings has little to shrink. If it is still over the limit, Split PDF can cut it into files under the size you need.

Turning a whole page into a picture when you wanted the picture on it. PDF to JPG saves each page as an image, while Extract images from PDF gives you the photos and logos inside the file at their original quality.

Choosing JPG for a page of text. JPG suits photos and scans and keeps files small; PNG keeps text, tables and line drawings sharp. PDF to JPG offers both.

Uploading a full-size phone photo. A form that wants a picture under 100 KB will refuse a camera photo of several megabytes. Compress image finds the best quality under the limit and sets an exact pixel size if the form asks for one.

Making a file grey and then needing its text. Grayscale PDF turns each page into a grey picture, so the words can no longer be selected or searched. Keep the colour file as well.

Building a PDF from photos in the wrong order. JPG to PDF shows the photos as a list you can reorder before the file is made, which is quicker than fixing the pages afterwards.

Expecting a picture to be sharper than the page it came from. PDF to JPG can only draw what is in the file, so a page scanned at low resolution stays soft whatever setting you choose. Use “Print” for printing; “Screen” is usually enough for sharing, and much smaller.

Our guide to combining phone photos of documents into one PDF covers taking clear photos, putting them in order and getting the file under an upload limit. For scans that came out sideways, backwards or with empty pages, see how to fix a messy scanned PDF.
