How to delete pages from a PDF

How pages are deleted, and what is left in the file

The pages you delete are taken out of the file itself, the same way Rearrange pages moves pages inside it. Nothing is copied or redrawn, so the pages you keep look exactly as they did. At least one page has to stay, and the line under the pages tells you how many will be left before you press the button.

Because the file stays one file, what ties its pages together keeps working: bookmarks that lead to kept pages, links from one kept page to another, and form fields you can still fill in. The file keeps its title and any files attached to it. A bookmark or link that led to a deleted page is removed, and a bookmark that has entries under it stays as a heading while those entries still lead somewhere.

Then everything nothing points to any more leaves the file: the deleted pages’ text and pictures, their notes and their form answers. We check this with a test file whose clickable table of contents links to the page being deleted, and the deleted page’s words must not be found anywhere in the saved file. One thing is lost on the way: in an accessible PDF, the hidden tags screen readers use are taken out, because they also hold text from the deleted pages.

Example: a fax cover and a page scanned twice

For this example we made a seven-page volunteer induction pack for a made-up community garden, as it might come out of an office scanner: a fax-style cover sheet first, and page 5 a second copy of page 4, because the scanner took the same sheet twice.

Click pages 1 and 5, or type “1, 5” in the Pages box. Both get the delete mark, and the line under them says 5 pages will be left. Press “Delete 2 pages” and download the new file; the original is still on your device if you need it.

If you only want to keep two pages out of twenty, Extract pages is quicker: there you pick what stays instead of what goes, and the result is the same.

When you would use it

  • Dropping the cover sheet, the fax header or the page of instructions that the reader does not need.

  • Taking out a page of personal details before a document goes to a wider group.

  • Cutting a forty-page catalogue down to the two pages a client asked about.

  • Removing pages that came out badly in a phone scan, so you can photograph just those again.

What to expect

  • Deleted pages are really removed, not covered over or hidden. To blank out part of a page instead, use Redact PDF.

  • Numbers printed on the pages do not change, so a document that shows page numbers will need fresh ones from Add page numbers.

  • Bookmarks, links and form fields on the pages you keep go on working. Screen-reader tags in an accessible PDF are removed when pages are deleted.

  • If you want to keep a handful of pages rather than remove most of them, Extract pages is the quicker way round.

  • The saved file is a new copy and your original stays untouched on your device, so a page removed by mistake is never lost: start again from the original.

Can I remove pages from PDF free, without signing up?

Is my file uploaded?

No. The pages are shown and removed inside your browser, on your device. Your PDF is never sent to us or anyone else.

Are the deleted pages really gone?

Yes. The pages are removed from the file itself, and everything that belonged only to them goes as well: their text, pictures and form fields. A link or bookmark that jumped to a deleted page is taken out too, so nothing can carry the page along hidden. If only part of a page is private, use Redact PDF instead and keep the rest of the page.

Can I delete every page?

No. A PDF must have at least one page, so at least one page has to stay.

Will the remaining pages change?

No. The pages you keep have the same text, images and fonts, including Arabic text, as before. Bookmarks and links between them still work, and their form fields can still be filled in. Only bookmarks and links that pointed at a deleted page are removed.

How do I delete one page from a PDF on my phone?

Open the file here in your phone’s browser, tap the page you want gone until it shows the delete mark, then press the delete button at the bottom of the screen and download the new file. No app is needed.

Why can’t I open my password-protected PDF?

Protected files are encrypted, so their pages can’t be read or copied. Remove the password first, then open the file again.

Can I change the order of the pages instead?

Yes, with our Rearrange pages tool: it shows the same page pictures and lets you drag them into any order.
