What changes in the page when you crop it
Every page in a PDF has a frame that sets which part of it a reader shows and prints. Cropping here sets that frame to the box you drew and redraws nothing, so text stays text you can select and copy, pictures keep their sharpness, and the file size hardly changes. We set two frames together, the one readers show and the one that describes the sheet, so a printer or an older program doesn’t fall back to the full page.
The box is measured as a share of the page as you see it, not in millimetres. That is why one box can be applied to pages of different sizes, and why a page that is turned is cropped where you see the box rather than where it would fall in the file’s own coordinates. The line under the page shows what is left, for example “Kept: about 127 × 76 mm (15% of the page)”, and “Whole page” puts the box back on the edges.
The thing to know: what is outside the box is hidden, not deleted. It stays inside the file, and any editing tool can bring it back. Cropping works this way in every PDF program, which is why we say it plainly. If the edges hold a phone number, a name or an address you don’t want to share, use Redact PDF, which really removes what is under its black boxes.
Example: trimming a scanned recipe card
For this example we made a one-page A4 file with a recipe card in the middle and wide white margins around it, the way a small card comes out when it is scanned on a flatbed scanner.
Drag the corners of the box to the edges of the card and watch the line under the page until it shows only the card is kept. Choose “Page 1 only” or “All pages” (the same thing in a one-page file) and press “Crop pages”. The result opens at the size of the card, so it fills a phone screen when someone opens it in a chat.
If you have a scan with several cards or receipts on different pages, each in its own place, crop one page at a time with “Page … only” and the page arrows. One box for every page only works when the pages are alike.

What to expect
Cropping hides the edges rather than deleting them: the writing outside the box is still inside the file, so this is not a way to blank out private details. To take them out for good, use Redact PDF.
It changes what you see, not the sheet a printer uses. To put every page on A4 or Letter, follow with Resize pages.
One box can be applied to the whole file, which suits pages that are alike; a mixed scan is better done page by page.
If the real goal is fitting more onto each printed sheet, Pages per sheet saves far more paper than cropping does.

Can I undo a crop?
Keep your original file and crop it again. In the cropped file itself the edges are hidden, so cropping it a second time starts from what is left.
Can I trim PDF pages and keep the rest of the file as it is?
Yes. Choose “Page … only” before you crop, and the box is applied to the page on screen while every other page keeps its size. To crop another page with a different box, save, open the result and crop that one.
Does cropping make the file smaller?
Hardly, because what is outside the box stays inside the file. To make the file smaller, use Compress PDF.
Why can’t I open my password-protected PDF?
Protected files are encrypted, so their pages can’t be read or changed. Remove the password first, then open the file again.
